In Acts 19:8 Paul has enters into a new city, Ephesus. He finds 12 disciples, he upgrades them into a new dimension of Christian life, baptising them with the Holy Spirit. Inspired and eager to continue sharing the message of the Way in Ephesus Paul enters the synagogue. He preaches boldly and successfully for 3 months until opposition to him arises in the house of God. Hearts become hard, minds refuse to believe and the mouths of some begin to publically slander Paul’s gospel message and ministry. Paul knows that his new disciples cannot be effectively raised in a place of contention, at the risk of contamination Paul takes his disciples into the School of Tyrannus where the trains and equips them daily for 2 years giving us an insight to his unique model of discipleship training.

The School of Tyrannus was a public hall where Greeks would debate, study and learn. The hall used by Paul was likely owned by a philosopher named Tyrannus. Paul used the same method of drawing his disciples away from controversy and adversary to be free to preach, train and persuade both Jew and Greek in other cities also. In Philippi, Paul worked from Lydia’s home (Acts 16:14-15), in Thessalonica he operated from Jason’s home (Acts 17:5-9) and in Athens he used the marketplace and the Areopagus for discipleship training.

EDT is based on Paul’s successful model for training disciples. In Acts 19:10 is says, ‘all the Jews and Greeks who lived in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.’ Every man of God and every church has a word from the Lord, a message that must be shared to the ends of the earth. EDT is not the church and it does not replace the church but it trains church members to become self-governing, competent carries of the message who influence entire regions and domains.

EDT is like a BASE OF OPERATION for the soldiers of the Lord to be launched from, training and retrained in and to return to receive the next assignment. A headquarters to strategically impact the city. EDT is also like a BOOT CAMP, a place to make civilians into solders and to train the elite for godly assignments. A place of separation from the ordinary, high discipline and adventure. EDT is like a FINISHING SCHOOL, it puts the final polish on the life of a believer, it is holistic in approach refining the heart and ensuring the believers whole life is able to support their destiny.

Our dream at EDT is that in the same way that every local church has a Children’s church they would have a school of Tyrannus type discipleship school, training and sending mature believers to carry the message of the Lord into all the earth.
